The Fox and the Goat

By an unlucky chance a Fox fell into a deep well from which he could not get out. A Goat passed by shortly afterwards, and asked the Fox what he was doing down there. "Oh, have you not heard?" said the Fox; "there is going to be a great drought, so I jumped down here in order to be sure to have water by me. Why don't you come down too?" The Goat thought well of this advice, and jumped down into the well. But the Fox immediately jumped on her back, and by putting his foot on her long horns managed to jump up to the edge of the well. "Good-bye, friend," said the Fox, "remember next time...

I think that the maxim of this fable is that don't trust everything that you see. I think that this is the maxim because in that case if the goat didn't listen to the fox then she wouldn't have gotten stuck into the well.

I relate this to Cooperation from CARES. I relate this to Cooperation because the fox even thought what he did was wrong cooperated with the goat in an unfair way so that he could get out of the hole.

The Crow and the Pitcher

The Crow and the Pitcher

A Crow, half-dead with thirst, came upon a Pitcher which had once been full of water; but when the Crow put its beak into the mouth of the Pitcher he found that only very little water was left in it, and that he could not reach far enough down to get at it. He tried, and he tried, but at last had to give up in despair. Then a thought came to him, and he took a pebble and dropped it into the Pitcher. Then he took another pebble and dropped it into the Pitcher. Then he took another pebble and dropped that into the Pitcher. Then he took another pebble and dropped that into the Pitcher. Then he took another pebble and dropped that into the Pitcher. Then he took another pebble and dropped that into the Pitcher. At last, at last, he saw the water mount up near him, and after casting in a few more pebbles he was able to quench his thirst and save his life.

I think that the maxim of this fable is if you do something little by little it will get done.

I relate this to cooperation from CARES. I think that this relates to cooperation from CARES because if you work together with others little by little it gets done. You need to work together to acomplish something that seem impossible.

The Fisher and the Little Fish

The Fisher and the Little Fish

It happened that a Fisher, after fishing all day, caught only a little fish. "Pray, let me go, master," said the Fish. "I am much too small for your eating just now. If you put me back into the river I shall soon grow, then you can make a fine meal off me."

"Nay, nay, my little Fish," said the Fisher, "I have you now. I may not catch you hereafter."

I think that the maxim of this story is a little thing in hand is worth more than a great thing in prospect. This means that if you have something then you should be glad that you have it insteed of being greedy and wanting more.

This relates to self- control from CARES. I think this because the fisher was controling himself to be humble and be glad that he got food.

The Four Oxen and the Lion

A Lion used to prowl about a field in which Four Oxen used to dwell. Many a time he tried to attack them; but whenever he came near they turned their tails to one another, so that whichever way he approached them he was met by the horns of one of them. At last, however, they fell a-quarrelling among themselves, and each went off to pasture alone in a separate corner of the field. Then the Lion attacked them one by one and soon made an end of all four.

I think that the maxim is that you need to work together to accomplish things. When the oxen started to argue then they weren't as strong and they all were attacked by the wolf.

I think that this is related to Cooperation in CARES. I think this because cooperating means to working together and the Oxen worked together to accomplish a goal; to try to avoid being eaten by the wolf.

The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

A Wolf found great difficulty in getting at the sheep owing to the vigilance of the shepherd and his dogs. But one day it found the skin of a sheep that had been flayed and thrown aside, so it put it on over its own pelt and strolled down among the sheep. The Lamb that belonged to the sheep, whose skin the Wolf was wearing, began to follow the Wolf in the Sheep's clothing; so, leading the Lamb a little apart, he soon made a meal off her, and for some time he succeeded in deceiving the sheep, and enjoying hearty meals.

I think that the maxim(moral) of this fable is that don't judge a book by its cover and appearances are deceiving. I think this because the wolf acted like a sheep even though he was a wolf in sheep clothing. If the sheep noticed this instead of dismissing the wolf as a sheep then the wolf would've been caught.

I just feel sad for the sheep...

The lesson that this story teaches is to be kind to everyone around you. I think that this is the lesson because the little boy learned that's what he should do to his parents when he grows up and his parents wouldn't like that, just like the little boy's grandfather doesn't like it. This way the parents start being kind to the grandfather and the boy learns that that's the way to treat your elders.

I think that this is related to Self-Control in CARES. I think this because you control yourself not to be mean to others.

Bullying (Man's inhumanity to Man)

I think that society can't stop it because It's a never ending cycle. The first bully bullies someone, then that person wants revenge for being bullied so they bully someone else. It never ends unless if you get bullied you can find a diffrent way to take out your anger. For example talking to someone or writing it down in a journal. That way you can get yours feelings out but in a positive way that doesn't hurt anyone in the process. This is kind of like Slate's Limbo because he gets bullied all of the time, but he lets his feelings out by hiding in the subway. This isn't the best way because you always can't runaway from your problems but at least he gets out his feelings without hurting somebody or someone else.

My first Lit Blog Entrey

What character did you identify with the most? Why?

I read the book, Redwall by Brian Jacques. I think that I identify with Constance the Badger the most. I think this because Constance was a leader and she was funny, kind and quick witted. She knew the right way to handle a situation without getting confused or afraid. She also could psych out the enemy because she was bigger than everyone else and she was respected by enemies and allies. I also think that I identify with Constance the badger because I have a lot of the same characteristics. For example I don't get scared or confused in scary situations, and I like to help out other people. I can psych out my opponents before I race and I lead our Cross Country team to victory.
