The Great Race!

My car for The Great Race is a balloon car. It is an old milk carton(that has been thoroughly washed out) with spools for wheels and a balloon for a power source.

My car is an example of Newton's Third Law of Motion; For Every Action there is an equal and opposite reaction. My car is an example of this because the balloon is placed at the back of the car and when I release the car the air pressure from the balloon makes the car go forward. This is an opposite reaction because the balloon is facing one way and is making the car go in the opposite direction.

My car is also an example of Newton's First Law of Motion; An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will continue moving in a straight line at a constant speed until an outside force acts on it. My car is an example of this because first the friction on the wheels helps stop the car eventually putting it into rest. My car is also an example of this because without the balloon's power the car would stay at rest and wouldn't move. (well except for gravity but that wouldn't work as well as the balloon.)

Kinetic Energy- The energy of motion
Potential Energy- The energy of position

So today we were talking about Physics in Science class and the diffrence between Kinetic Energy and Potential Energy. To explain the diffrence we used slinkies! Well the slinkies that we used weren't glow in the dark, but it was still cool. We had to figure out the highest point of Potential energy, so we made a tower of boxes! Then we dropped the slinky down from the tower of boxes and it moved all by itself until it hit the floor.

I thought that it was an interesting way to learn about Kinetic and Potential Energy!

What causes people to 'blank out'?

Well from my intellectual research (using google) I found out that building anxiety(getting nervous) and or being stressed out causes people to blank out. The result is fainting (also known as blacking out.) Fainting, "blacking out," or syncope is the temporary loss of consciousness followed by the return to full wakefulness. (basically you go unconcious and then you wake up again)

When you get nervous or stressed your brain can't handle the pressure and it temporarily freezes up. This cause your body to shut down and you faint(blank out)

One Random Question

So we looked at DNA extraction of a strawberry today, and I was just thinking if you put the DNA of a strawberry into a human embryo (when the baby is still in the mother's stomech) would it give the human baby qualities of a strawberry? (ex. red hair, bumps on skin)

I mean like If you could get into the embryo safely and insert the DNA into it

The assignment was to write down the most interesting facts that we learned from this answer.

The question is: I realize that humans have 46 chromosomes and chimps 48, but do we (homo sapiens) have more genes or fewer genes than the chimp?

I learned that chimps and humans are over 98% the same even though we aren't chimps. This happened because over time some chromosomes were either copied, lost or gained. I think that the essential chromosome for making us chimps was lost and we gained new ones so that we could become more intelligent and evolve into humans. I also learned that goldfish have 94 chromosomes and the toucan has 104! I mean even though the number of chromesomes that we have is basically random, I think we should have more chromosomes because we are a bigger species but I think that the bigger you are the less chromosomes that you have. Lastly I learned that the human probably has the same number of genes as the chimp because we are so similar.

One thing that I learned from the website about traits is that you can inherit may diffrent kinds of traits from your parents. These include physical traits, behavoral traits, and predisposition to a medical condition. Physical Traits are characteristics of one's makeup. One example would be your eye color or the color of your skin. Behavoral Traits are the characteristics of the way one acts. One example of this would be a sheepdog dogs instinct to herd. Predisposition to a medical condition means that you have an increased chance of getting a diesease, not like the flu something that you can get from the enviroment but like sickle cell animea, or cystic fiborosis.

One thing that I learned from the website about heredity is that you get your traits from your parents. Each human body contains two complete sets of chromosomes. Each parents contribiuts one complete set to the child. This way we can inherit traits which become a part of heredity.

There are 7 steps to the video game making process, Step 1 Preproduction, Step 2 Creating the characters, Step 3 Putting it all in Motion, Step 4 The Game World, Step 5 Code, Step 6 Post Production, and Step 7 Marketing. In step 1 designers come up with a story board which includes stuff like a basic story, and worlds for the game. That way they have a basic idea of what they are doing. In step 2 they start to create the characters. They draw the main characters over and over again until it is perfect, then they scan it into the computer to make it into a 3D character. Next they add details, colour and texture until the character is complete. In step 3 Putting it all in Motion the designers make the computer control the character so that it can move. Some video games use a human wearing a special suit with sensors on it so when the human moves the character moves too. In step 4 the Game World, designers start to come up with a game world and start to create it. The game world helps give gamers a sense of the setting of the game. Even unoticible things like the clouds in the backround of the way the grass looks make the game seem more realistic. The code is the thing that makes all of the systems work together. In step 6 Post Production, these are the game testers. In order to see fatal flaws in the game they send it to these people who play the game and give feedback. Sometimes they even send it out to the public for a certian amount of time so that people can test it and give feedback. Lastly in step 7 they adverstise the product. In order to help sell the game they make "demos" so that customers can see what the game is like.

I think that this topic was interesting expecialy step 2. It must be pretty hard to draw and redraw and redraw the character so many times. I thought that this topic was interesting. I thought this because I play a lot of video games and sometimes I think about how hard it is to make one.

Class Response for Biome Project!

My favorite thing that we did in class was the Biome project. We had to design an eco-vacation to a biome anywhere in the world. I picked the one I wanted; Tundra. This was my favorite thing that we did in class because I thought that it was fun to look up the stuff on the Tundra and I also thought that it was fun to decorate my brochure. I also thought that this was my favorite project because I liked looking at everyone elses project. Some people were really decorative like my friend Bigbang2nt1 . If I could do this project again I would make mine a little more creative so It looked more appealing to the eye. I also would add more info to it so if it wasn't so appealing to the eye then at least it would've had the most info.

The Tundra is a cold and dry biome. A biome is a group of areas that have the same climate. I learned many things about the Tundra. For example I learned that the Tundra is covered in permafrost. Permafrost is when the ground freezes completely. In the spring however the permafrost melts enough so that small patches of grass and shrubs can grow.

When you sleep, your body rests and gathers energy. If you sleep well your most likely able to recover form stress, illness, and even solve problems! There are two forms of sleep. REM which stands for Rapid Eye Movement sleep and NREM Non-Rapid Eye Movement sleep. When you sleep your body switches from NREM sleep to REM sleep. When you first fall asleep you sleep in NREM sleep then you switch to a short period of REM sleep. Your dreams still go on in these stages though. Normally REM sleep in total lasts about and hour and a half(90 minutes.) The first period of REM sleep happens for about ten minutes. In REM sleep you normally have nightmares or very intense dreams. In these dreams your face, legs, or fingers might twitch or move. NREM sleep lasts for the rest of the time. In NREM sleep your body repairs body tissue and build bones and muscles. You also strengthen your Immune system, but as you get older you get less NREM sleep.

Why would people want to know what happens in their sleep? In my opinion you just fall asleep to recover your energy. You just have dreams to stimulate your mind and pass the time. I think that people are just really curious and they want to know everything but really, who wants to know that their body moves by itself when you sleep. That kind of scares me a little. I thought that this topic was interesting but a little boring.

My favorite subject is novel (lit) because, I like to read. I like to read Japanese comic books called manga. You read those types of books from left to right. The best book that I ever read was in a book series called A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. My favorite book in that series was book 5 the Austere Academy.

My favorite food to buy in the cafeteria is chocolate chip cookies. When all my chores are done on the weekends I like to either read or play on my DS or on my laptop.

If I won a free airline ticket to go anywhere I think I would go to Hokkaido Japan. I would go there because I hear that its very close to the mountains but near the water so you could go to the beach. Plus a lot of mangas are set around Hokkaido and that area.

My favorite colour is blue. I have a pet dog. His name is Churchill and he is a weimaraner, which is a german hunting dog. This year if I work hard enough I hope to get into pre-algebra in math and get straight A's in all of my subjects. Also to run the mile in 8 minutes.
